China instigates increase in volitility

The various indices that measure stockmarket volatility have been drifting down for the last three years, but have risen a couple of times this year. Again this week they surged as a fall in the Chinese market provided more ammunition for the bears, but it was not enough to hold back the tide of buying.

S&P closes in on it's all time high

Last week, equities around the world were racing ahead with the feeling that the S&P 500 would at long last surpass its year 2000 high. Although it is near the best historic close at 1527, the actual intra-day high came in at 1552. This area is crucial as there may be plenty of short stops that need to be cleared before there are no more buyers to keep the rally going.

Dow Jones hits yet another new high

This week the Dow Jones hit its twenty third new high since it breached the year 2000 peak last October, and at the time many commentators were saying that we were not in a proper bull market because the wider S&P 500 index was still way below its own peak. The interesting point now is that the S&P has raced up and is just 27 points away from its own all time high at 1527, and one wonders if there are plenty of short stops positioned around here.
